World Amateur Radio Day 2025 April 18th. It was on this day in 1925 that the International Amateur Radio Union was formed in Paris. This year is therefore a special 100th anniversary of the International Amateur Radio Union. Since 1925, the IARU has grown to include 160 member-societies in three regions across the world. On 21 January 2025, voting was completed concerning the admission of the Libyan Communications Amateur Society to IARU membership, our newest member. IARU has set a theme of "Entering the Next Century of Amateur Radio Communications and Innovation" for the day and amateur radio operators across the world will take to the airwaves in celebration. Despite continuing challenges nationally and across the world during 2024, the amateur radio community, particularly in the UK, stayed strong and the RSGB supported it. The RSGB General Manager Steve Thomas, M1ACB wrote his annual feature called A year in numbers for the March RadCom and shared some great things to celebrate, in which RSGB HQ staff often led the way. You can see the highlights in a brief video on the RSGB YouTube channel. The April RadCom will show in detail the work of the committees and other specialist volunteers. BE NICE AND SHARE YOUR TOYS. Spectrum-sparing. The concept is nothing new for radio amateurs, but now in the UK, the regulator is proposing that, for the first time, spectrum sharing should be done between two different technologies. With traffic increasing for the usage of both Wi-Fi and mobile services, Ofcom is exploring ways for both technologies to share the upper part of the 6 GHz band - frequencies between 6.425 and 7.125 GHz. The regulator is hoping that its implementation will benefit mobile networks, especially in crowded areas, and at the same time provide support for advanced Wi-Fi services. The proposed sharing would require both services to explore ways of integrating shared usage, perhaps by developing a sensing capability in which one could detect the others presence on a frequency. In a statement, Ofcom said the change would provide a basis for the future, eventually supporting virtual and augmented reality as well as AI. Himachal Pradesh is a state in the northern part of India, situated in the Western Himalayas and their government is set to enhance its disaster preparedness by installing Doppler Weather Radar Stations in Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti and expanding ham radio training for emergency response personnel. The decision was taken during a meeting of the State Executive Committee of the Disaster Management Authority. The meeting also discussed the use of ham radio communication in disaster management. Officials informed that 88 personnel in the state have already undergone ham radio training, with examinations being conducted to assess their proficiency. Given the challenging terrain and frequent network disruptions in Himachal's remote areas, it was decided to extend ham radio training to firefighting and State Disaster Response Force personnel. This step aims to establish a robust emergency communication network to ensure uninterrupted coordination during disasters. Houston police are investigating an act of vandalism that damaged the transmitter and tower lights of Spanish Broadcasting System Spanish regional Mexican La Ley 92.1 KROI, just before the scheduled debut of the stations new morning show hosted by local radio and TV veteran Raul Brindis. KROI management suspects the tower vandalism, where dozens of wires were cut, a fence was clipped, and shieldings were smashed, was an act of sabotage. Since my last report on the broadcast a couple of weeks ago, things have moved along rapidly. The VKCL log conversion program has borne fruit! And its not the rough end of a pineapple, I have to say. Results for the 2023 Summer, Winter and Spring field days have been posted to the VHF-UHF Field Days page on the WIA website. wia.org.au/members/contests/vhfuhf/ I have to thank Peter Forbes VK3QI for completing the log conversions, aided and abetted by his duo of programmers, who have pulled off a remarkable feat. Peter has completed basic reviews of the logs and compiled shortform tables of final scores in each category and sub-category, rather than complete tables of band-by-band results as was the practice previously. I have crafted these into readable tables in PDF format, which you can download from the website. Results for the three 2024 events will follow, shortly. This may be, for example, by adding a suffix to their call if the prefix is for an Area where they are not operating. In the event that this is not possible, they must provide the correct Commonwealth Call Area in the Soapbox to their log. Newsline have reported on how winter racing fans in Michigans Upper Peninsula finally got what they waited two years for: enough snow in the region for the return of a sled-dog race that is a qualifier to the world famous Iditarod. Hams werent pulling sleds but they were on the scene anyway, pulling down some big responsibilities to ensure participant safety. Its called the UP200 and its 228-mile snow-covered path through near wilderness, creek crossings and challenging terrain brings out sled dogs, racing fans and amateur radio operators. The races challenged the four-footed athletes, the sledders navigational skills and some 30 radio amateurs responsible for keeping everyone as safe and as on-track as they could. Radio communication was coordinated by Tom Perry, KE8TPT, and many of the hams were from the Hiawatha Amateur Radio Association. Tom told local media outlets that the success of the system drew heavily on having a robust linked repeater system in the region. This allowed everyone to hear all the other radio operators. With cell phone access not being an option, that kept everyone - including the hams - in the race. The Iditarod, a major sporting event in Alaska, will be held this month, May, in Anchorage. The spacecraft, part of Firefly's "Ghost Riders in the Sky" mission, completed a three-minute, 18-second engine burn that reduced its altitude to 120 kilometres above the lunar surface. This manoeuvre marked a critical phase of the mission. Firefly Aerospace has warned of intermittent communications blackouts as the lander orbits around the moon's far side. This breakthrough enables live video transmission in bandwidth-constrained and remote environments where such capabilities were previously unattainable. Steve Schickel was a young high school student in the late 80s and was introduced to amateur radio through his electronics classes. He also spent time working at a local RadioShack and watching science fiction movies at a nearby theatre in his hometown of Pensacola, Florida. Amateur radios next biggest influence on Steve came in 1997, on opening night of the movie Contact, about a scientist who finds evidence of extra-terrestrial life and is chosen to make first contact. I remember the entire theatre erupted when, (he said), in the opening scene, amateur radio operator K4WLD responded to a call from W9GFO and stated his location was Pensacola. It sounded like the home team had scored in overtime to win the game; it was so loud! Fast-forward to November 2024. Steve passed the exam for his Technician license and was assigned KQ4YXP on November 11. Then he passed his General license exam and on November 29 changed his to callsign to KQ4ZDR and then again to KZ4OW. After a month of study, he passed his Extra Class license exam. These efforts are part of the international Cospas-Sarsat satellite-aided search and rescue system, which has helped save over 50,000 lives worldwide since 1982. Using GPS satellites, emergency beacons transmit distress signals to the Cospas-Sarsat network, enabling first responders to locate and rescue those in need. NASA's Search and Rescue Office has been involved in rescue operations since 1979 and continues to enhance beacon technology for both Earth-based and space missions. The Advanced Next-Generation Emergency Locator (ANGEL) beacon is being developed to support crew recovery efforts, including for Artemis missions returning from deep space.
