This is not a contest. It honours those modes used by service personnel in earlier wars. The event idea came from a telephone conversation between Mike "Banjo" Patterson VK4MIK and World War II Coastwatcher in Papua New Guinea, Lionel Veale. He set up his ATR4A HF radio and orientated the antenna from behind enemy lines. Lionel was one of those brave Coastwatchers who sent back vital information. The concept developed by the Tableland Radio Group in Far North Queensland basically asks us to consider changing modes on ANZAC Day nets, as an honour and Amateur Radio salute to those who served or are serving. The annual event involves ex-military sites and related museums. It includes most of the radio nets happening on ANZAC Day throughout Queensland. The Townsville Amateur Radio Club has been asked to anchor the event throughout the day and will be operating from the Clubrooms on top of the Green Street Bunker at West End using the callsign AX4ATV. The Clubrooms are part of a camouflage structure that was placed on top of the RAAF Communications HQ (project 81) during WW2. Thanks to the organising and planning by Ray/AX4OIL, some other TARCadians led by Army Veteran Snow/AX4ME will again activating the historic World War 2 Oonoonba Bombing Site running portable stations on Amplitude Modulation on 40 and 20metres and highlighting the need for the site to be preserved by the Queensland Government as an important commemoration site for community use. Matman/AX4GUN will be operating from his radio room in AM at Carlyle Gardens in Condon, again battling with the local switch- mode generated doodads that power the mod-cons in the haciendas, a penultimate resting place for many a veteran. Honouring not only the ANZAC Spirit but also the first every licenced Amateur Radio Station (Marcus Brimms XQA Mareeba) members of the Tablelands Radio and Electronics Club will gather at the radio shack of Stu/AX4SDD near Mudlanda and use callsign AX4XQA to operate the 150W AM Transmitter engineered and built by John/VK4TL and receive signals on a heritage valve receiver which was operated during World War Two by the code breakers at Bletchley Park. Jens/AX4PE will be operating a portable CW station on 40, 30 and 20metres from the Stagpole Street Quarry, showing how a simple amateur radio station can effectively communicate across the country. Many Amateurs joined our Defence forces and took their skills into their service lives in a wide range of activities such as Coastwatchers, Air Force Radio operators, Radar operators and repair, navy radio operators and Army operations. On the 26th & 27th April following ANZAC Day the 8th AMRO event will happen – Australian Military Radio Operators and their converted Military Radios will be on the air. This yearâ€Ös theme is to associate with the 80th Anniversary of Operation Manna and Operation Chowhound by U.S.A, the humanitarian food drops to relieve the famine in The Netherlands behind enemy lines late in World War 2. There will be special event callsigns on the air from Friday 25th to Sunday 27th April, look out for PH80MAN, GB80MAN, VK80MAN and many more. Check out the AMRO website that Andrew/VK5WT has put together for more information at http://110.232.143.96/~ww2armyr/AMRO/amro.htm Suggested AM and CW frequencies to be used for AM & CW on ANZAC Day and Australian Military Radio Operators Operation Manna are - 630m CW Frequency at your choice within the band 160m 1818kHz CW, 80m 3530kHz CW, 80m 3686kHz AM, 40m 7006kHz CW, 40m 7028 to 7030kHz CW (7028kHz is a crystal freq used by many) 40m 7060kHz AM, 40m 7125kHz AM [NET] (Primary Liaison Frequency and may be busy) 30m 10102kHz CW, 30m 10125kHz AM (SSB phone zone - with respect to the ANZAC AM for event) 20m 14030kHz CW, 20m 14125kHz AM, 15m 21030kHz CW, 15m 21125kHz AM 10m refer to bandplan for CW, for AM go USB +10kHz 11m HF CB call 27085kHz CH11 AM, HF CB working 27125kHz CH14 AM. If conditions are poor on 7MHz, other relay stations will attempt to assist contacts. If conditions are very poor on 7MHz Net Control might move the net to around 3600kHz depending on how pliable the net participants are. Mix it with other WICEN ops and call in on the net !!
