**THE 555 TIMER IC**

THE 555 TIMER INTEGRATED CIRCUIT, DESIGNED BY HANS CAMENZIND IN 1971,
IS ONE OF THE MOST MANUFACTURED CHIPS IN HISTORY WITH OVER ONE BILLION
UNITS PRODUCED ANNUALLY. DESPITE BEING NEARLY 55 YEARS OLD, IT REMAINS
IN WIDESPREAD USE TODAY. INTERESTINGLY, CAMENZIND DESIGNED THIS ICONIC
CHIP ENTIRELY BY HAND WITHOUT COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN TOOLS, SKETCHING
THE CIRCUIT LAYOUT ON DRAFTING PAPER OVER A PERIOD OF SEVERAL MONTHS.
THE ORIGINAL DESIGN USED 25 TRANSISTORS, 2 DIODES, AND 15 RESISTORS,
YET THIS RELATIVELY SIMPLE CONFIGURATION ALLOWED IT TO FUNCTION AS A
TIMER, OSCILLATOR, AND FLIP-FLOP ELEMENT, MAKING IT EXTRAORDINARILY
VERSATILE FOR COUNTLESS APPLICATIONS.
